AI is killing the “blame millennials” industry

Millennials are used to taking the heat for “killing” things. (See: Bar soap, doorbells, and somehow, breast-aurants?) But this economy ain't big enough for two industry killers, and the title now goes to... AI.

Yes, AI has incredible potential: It can detect cancer, often faster and more accurately than humans, direct  resources after natural disasters, and even help you draft an acceptably dry "I can’t make your wedding" text. But, it’s also scrambled a lot of systems we rely on, and we’re still figuring out the aftermath. Like…

News: Organic web traffic to publishers is tanking, thanks to Google’s new AI-generated search results.

Hiring: Bots are now writing resumes and reading them. TBD if they can actually pick the best human for the job.

1:1s With Your Boss: Why have another meeting that could’ve been an AI summary?

Book Publishing: AI leaders Meta and Anthropic can train their models on purchased books — a major blow to authors and publishers fighting to keep their work from being scraped.

Pop Girls: The guy who helped bring sexy back recently launched an AI pop star named TaTa and I just fully dissociated while typing this.

But there may be a vibe shift coming. Apple recently flagged that, while current AI models are great at recognizing patterns, they fully crash out when it comes to complex thought –– aka the thing humans (theoretically) do best.

Here’s hoping employers soon remember that AI can’t replace actual judgment, creativity, or that sixth sense your coworker has for DMing you "hey, do you have a few minutes?"

Should I hold off on buying a house until interest rates drop?

Since mortgage rates are constantly fluctuating, it’s difficult to predict exactly how they’ll change in the near future. As much as we’d all like to secure the lowest rate, some experts recommend “marrying the home and dating the rate,” if you find a home that checks all your boxes. Focus on what you can control — like your financial preparedness. You can start with online tools, like this affordability calculator, to determine the range you can afford before jumping into the homebuying process. Once you're ready to start shopping around, keep in mind that some lenders (including Chase) may allow you to lock in your rate while you look.
